As a distributor of wholesale-only building products, H.J. Oldenkamp Company works with everyone from residential builders and remodelers to hospitals and casinos. “We have a wide range of customers we call on, with a whole range of specific products that may apply to a situation,” says Marketing Manager Mark Renn. Renn and the rest of the customer-facing Oldenkamp staff use Act! to communicate with, manage, and market to their customers.
“We try to target who we communicate with and identify people in Act! who would get sensitive information versus the folks who would get general communication,” says Renn. “We segment the database quite heavily, and that enables us to create our templates and build our email communications specifically to a very tailored audience.”
“Other options were more complicated and more expensive. Act! was more scalable as we grew, and as we pulled more people from the company into it.”
Renn began using Act! as a sales manager, when managing customer information was a function of their back-office program. “Our existing system was part of our accounting software, and our account lists were essentially a great big binder of printed names, and trying to cross-reference those wasn’t horribly efficient and you couldn’t really track what you were doing,” says Renn. “Other options were more complicated and more expensive. Act! was more scalable as we grew, and as we pulled more people from the company into it.”
As the company and its uses for Act! grew, Renn relied on his Act! Certified Consultant to help configure Oldenkamp’s Act! installation. “We wanted to take it a little bigger and have remote users with a central database, and those things were beyond my scope,” says Renn. “The ACC can do as much or as little as you want them to do. Mine has probably helped me at least four times this week.”
Using Act! has given Renn and H.J. Oldenkamp Company the insights they need to keep the sales team on track and help the company grow. “We understand our customer base much better,” says Renn. “You always think you do, but Act! lets us analyze the data and track performance so we can get an idea of who we’re dealing with, where we need to go, and what our trends are.”
“Act! works for us. And every time I turn around it gets a little better.”
